AC replacement in Boca Raton

# AC Replacement in Boca Raton, Decided by the Numbers

AC replacement in Boca Raton should start with a question most quotes skip: does this system actually need replacing? We price the repair and the change-out side by side, show you the readings behind each one, and when replacement wins, we handle the matched equipment, the permit and the final inspection under license CAC1819111.

Decision helper

## Repair or Replace: Run Your Numbers

Enter the system's age, the repair quote and the refrigerant on the outdoor unit label. The helper shows how those inputs compare against a common rule of thumb. It starts the conversation; the on-site diagnosis finishes it.

Enter the age and the repair quote to see how they compare.

A rule of thumb, not a quote. Frank checks the actual system before recommending either, and recommends the repair when the repair is the right call.

### How this helper weighs your answers

It multiplies the system's age by the repair cost. Under 5,000 usually favors repairing; over 5,000 is a common point to price a replacement alongside the repair. An R-22 system adds weight toward replacement because R-22 is no longer produced, so recharging it gets harder and costlier. A large leak on an R-410A system adds some weight because new systems have moved to lower-GWP refrigerants. Two or more major repairs in two years also adds weight. None of this replaces an on-site diagnosis.

If this is you

## Holding a Big Repair Quote on an Older System?

If a technician just told you the compressor, the indoor coil or the outdoor fan motor has failed on a system that is 12 or 15 years old, you are standing at the exact point where homeowners overpay in both directions: some approve a large repair on equipment near the end, others replace a system that needed one part. The way out is two written prices, built on test readings, side by side.

Start with age, because the published life spans are shorter than many people expect. The U.S. Department of Energy's Home Cooling 101 guide lists a 15 to 20 year life span for central air conditioning. [American Standard](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/american-standard) puts a typical central AC at about 15 years and says a unit may wear out sooner in a hot, humid climate like Florida's. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement once a [heat pump](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/heat-pumps) or air conditioner passes 10 years, especially with frequent repairs, rooms that never feel right, or humidity problems.

Age alone is not a verdict. A 13-year-old system with a failed run capacitor is a repair, full stop. A 13-year-old system with a confirmed compressor failure is a different conversation. What separates them is the diagnosis: winding and amperage readings on a suspected compressor, pressures and superheat or subcooling on a suspected leak, and a look at the condition of everything that did not fail yet.

That is how every replacement conversation at Direct Cooling begins. Our technicians are trained by Frank Rey, who spent more than 20 years in HVAC before founding the company in 2017, to diagnose first and sell second. You get the reading, what it means, the repair price, and, when the numbers point that way, a replacement option on the same page. If the repair is the right call, that is the recommendation.

Failure by failure

## Which AC Failures Usually Justify a Replacement?

Most repair-or-replace calls come down to one of the failures below. The middle column is where the decision usually lands; the right column is why. Your system's age, refrigerant and condition can move any row.

Common AC failures and how they weigh on the repair or replace decision

| Failure found | Usually | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Run capacitor, contactor or a tripped float switch | Repair | Inexpensive wear parts that heat stress takes out; replacing a sound system over one of these wastes money |
| Clogged condensate drain or rusted drain pan | Repair | A drain or pan problem does not mean the refrigeration side is failing |
| Refrigerant leak on an R-410A system under 10 years old | Repair the leak | EPA allows existing [R-410A](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/refrigerant-changes) systems to be serviced; locate and fix the leak, do not just top it off |
| Refrigerant leak or failed coil on an R-410A system over 12 years old | Compare both | A large leak repair on aging equipment competes with a new A2L system that will run another decade or more |
| Compressor failure on a system 12 years or older | Compare both, often replace | The compressor is the most expensive part, and the rest of the system is the same age |
| Any major failure on an R-22 system | Price a replacement | R-22 production and import ended January 1, 2020, so recharges rely on a shrinking supply (EPA) |
| Heavily corroded outdoor coil near the coast | Usually replace | Coil corrosion from salt air is not a part swap; the condenser is effectively worn out |

Before you approve a compressor or coil replacement, ask for the test readings that confirmed it. A failed capacitor, contactor or control board can mimic a dead compressor.

Signals

## Signs Replacement Is Worth Pricing Even Without a Breakdown

ENERGY STAR lists these as signs it may be time to call a contractor about replacement. Each one also has a cheaper explanation we check first.

- **More than 10 years old** ENERGY STAR's threshold for considering replacement. Installed correctly, a certified replacement can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs, according to ENERGY STAR.
- **Frequent repairs and rising bills** Paying for a compressor, coil or fan motor season after season usually means the system is near the end.
- **Humidity you can feel** ENERGY STAR ties summer humidity problems to poor equipment operation, inadequate equipment or leaky [ductwork](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/ductwork). An oversized system short-cycles and leaves a Florida home cold and clammy.
- **Rooms that never cool** Can be the equipment, but often it is duct problems or insulation. We test the [ductwork](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/ductwork) before blaming the condenser.
- **A noisy system** ENERGY STAR links noise to an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil.
- **Far below today's minimum** Split AC systems installed in Florida since January 1, 2023 must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 for most homes (U.S. DOE).

Local wear factors

## What Shortens AC Life in Boca Raton

The same brand and model lasts longer in some ZIP codes than others. These are the local conditions we factor into a repair or replace recommendation.

### Salt air reaches inland

Carrier notes salt water can be carried as far as two miles from the coast, which is why coastal units need corrosion-resistant coils and coatings. That covers much of east Boca Raton, [Delray Beach](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/service-area/delray-beach) and [Boynton Beach](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/service-area/boynton-beach).

### Hours, not years

Systems here cool for most of the year, so a 10-year-old Boca system has logged far more run hours than the same unit up north. Age alone understates wear.

### Constant moisture

NOAA's 1991-2020 hourly normals for West Palm Beach show average summer dew points of roughly 72 to 74°F, so coils, pans and drains stay wet for months at a time.

### Storm and surge damage

Flooded outdoor units and lightning surges can turn a working system into a replacement overnight. Goodman advises a qualified inspection before restarting flooded equipment.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

## Do You Have to Replace an R-410A Air Conditioner?

No. EPA states that its refrigerant rules do not limit using or repairing equipment that is already installed, and no federal rule requires replacing a working R-410A system. What changed is new equipment: since January 1, 2025, new residential AC and heat pump systems must use refrigerant under EPA's 700 global warming potential limit, which rules out R-410A at a GWP of 2,088 and points to A2L refrigerants such as R-454B (GWP 465) and R-32 (GWP 675).

A second change arrived in 2026. EPA had set January 1, 2026 as the last day to install split systems built with pre-2025 R-410A components. A final rule signed May 21, 2026 and effective July 27, 2026 removed that deadline, so remaining R-410A inventory can be installed until it runs out. If a quote in your hand is for an R-410A system, ask whether it is new A2L equipment or leftover inventory, and what that means for service parts over the next 15 years.

The practical effect on a repair or replace decision is cost over time, not legality. EPA expects HFC supply to lessen as the phasedown continues, which matters most for large leak repairs on older R-410A systems. Residential AC is also excluded from EPA's 2026 leak repair requirements, which apply to appliances holding 15 pounds or more of HFC refrigerant.

If you do replace, the new system will almost certainly be A2L. American Standard uses R-454B, and [Rheem](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/rheem) chose R-454B as its primary refrigerant, with some products such as [mini splits](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/mini-splits) on R-32. EPA's SNAP program classifies A2L refrigerants as lower toxicity and lower flammability and approves them with use conditions, which is why American Standard's R-454B indoor coils ship with a refrigerant detection system that shuts down the compressor and runs the indoor fan if it senses a leak. Our [refrigerant guide](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/refrigerant-changes) has the full timeline.

From our permit records

## Where We Have Replaced AC Systems in West Boca

Palm Beach County's building portal lists 24 permits under our license, CAC1819111, from 2018 to 2026. Seven are exact like-for-like AC change-outs, and six of those are in unincorporated west Boca communities. Here is where, with the age of the homes from county property records.

Direct Cooling AC change-out permits in Palm Beach County (county ePZB records under CAC1819111, read 2026-10-06), aggregated to community

| Community | Homes built | Permitted work |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Boca Chase | Median year 1992 | AC change-out |
| Mission Bay, including Sonata at Mission Bay | 1986 to 2024, median 1993 | Two AC change-outs |
| Mizner Pointe of Boca | Townhomes, 1998 to 2000 | AC change-out |
| Charter Cay at Boca West | Condos, 1986 to 1987 | AC change-out |
| Boca Landings North | 1993 to 1994 | AC change-out |
| West Delray (ZIP 33446) | ZIP median year 1992 | AC change-out (2020) |
| West Palm Beach (city permit) | Not applicable | 2022 change-out: Rheem, 2.5 tons, 16 SEER, 5 kW heat |

The pattern is the point: most of these homes were built between the mid-1980s and late 1990s, so many are on their second or third system. City of Boca Raton permits cannot be searched by contractor, so city work does not appear here. We never publish customer addresses.

Change-out day

## How a Permitted AC Change-Out Works, Start to Final Inspection

Most residential change-outs finish in one day. Jobs that add duct or electrical work take longer, and we confirm the timeline at the free estimate.

### Permit first

Florida Statute 553.79 makes it unlawful to alter or repair a building system without a permit. Palm Beach County treats a straight AC change-out as a simpler permit type than a new system. Even an emergency change-out must file for its permit by the next business day (Florida Building Code 105.2.1).

### Recover the old refrigerant

Refrigerant is recovered, not vented, by technicians holding EPA Section 608 certification, then the old condenser and indoor equipment come out.

### Set a matched system

The new outdoor unit and indoor coil or air handler are installed as a rated pair, anchored for wind loads under Florida Mechanical Code 301.15, with the drain, pan and float switch replaced or verified.

### Line set and vacuum

The line set is replaced or flushed as the new refrigerant requires, then the system is pulled into a deep vacuum before charging.

### Charge and prove it

Refrigerant charged to the manufacturer specification; temperatures, pressures and airflow measured, not assumed.

### Inspection and handoff

Final inspection scheduled with the county or city, then the thermostat, filter size and warranty explained before we leave.

## What an AC Replacement Estimate Should Spell Out

Use this list on any quote, ours included. A missing line is a question worth asking before work starts.

- Indoor and outdoor units listed as a matched system with its SEER2 rating, not just the condenser model
- How the size was chosen: a load calculation, not a copy of the old unit's tonnage
- Refrigerant type, and whether the equipment is new A2L or remaining R-410A inventory
- Whether the indoor coil carries a refrigerant detection system
- Line set plan: replace or flush, and why
- Duct condition findings; Florida's energy code lets reused ducts stay on a replacement (R501.7), so leaks and damage should be quoted as a separate line
- Condensate drain, pan and float switch work included
- Permit pulled in the contractor's name, with the license number on the estimate
- Manufacturer warranty terms in writing, plus any labor coverage
- Whether the system and installer qualify for FPL's AC rebate

Paperwork that protects you

## Florida Rules That Matter When You Replace an AC

- **Your warranty starts at installation** Florida Statute 559.957 makes the manufacturer warranty run its full term from installation by a licensed contractor, without depending on registration. We still register it.
- **It transfers when you sell** Under Florida Statute 559.956, the manufacturer warranty transfers to the buyer automatically on a home sale, with no transfer fee.
- **The $15,000 line** Florida Statute 713.135 exempts a direct contract to repair or replace an existing heating or air-conditioning system under $15,000 from the permit-stage Notice of Commencement requirements. Above that amount, a recorded Notice of Commencement comes into play.
- **FPL rebate terms** FPL's residential AC rebate requires a new system with both indoor and outdoor units, rated 15.2 SEER2 or higher, installed by an FPL-approved Participating Independent Contractor. Check current terms at fpl.com before you count on it.
- **No federal tax credit** ENERGY STAR lists the federal 25C credit for qualifying equipment as available through December 31, 2025. A system installed in 2026 does not qualify.
- **Check the license** Look up any contractor at myfloridalicense.com. Ours, CAC1819111, is a certified air conditioning contractor license, active through August 31, 2028.

**Already have a replacement quote?**

Text a photo of it, and of the label on your outdoor unit, to (561) 210-7605. We will tell you honestly whether the repair still makes sense, and what the quote leaves out.

## Why Homeowners Bring Their Replacement Quotes to Direct Cooling

Direct Cooling is a family-run Boca Raton contractor working from Boca Commerce Park in [west Boca](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/service-area/west-boca-raton), holding Florida certified air conditioning contractor license CAC1819111. Frank Rey founded the company in 2017 after more than 20 years in HVAC and trains every technician himself. The rule he trains is the one this page is built on: diagnose first, sell second.

When replacement is the answer, we install two brands we can stand behind. Direct Cooling is an American Standard Customer Care Dealer, one of the independent dealers American Standard hand picks, and a Rheem Pro Partner, a status Rheem re-evaluates every year against training, review and licensing requirements. That lets us put two manufacturers' options side by side instead of selling whatever is on one shelf.

Customers have rated the company 4.9 on Google across more than 360 reviews (as of October 1, 2026). Direct Cooling has been BBB accredited with an A+ rating since 2021 and is listed by Expertise.com among the best HVAC and furnace repair companies in Boca Raton and [Deerfield Beach](https://www.directcoolingfl.com/service-area/deerfield-beach). Replacement estimates are free, and the dispatch line is monitored around the clock for systems that quit before the estimate does.

**How long does an AC last in Florida?**

The U.S. Department of Energy lists a 15 to 20 year life span for central air conditioning, and American Standard says about 15 years is typical but that units may wear out sooner in a hot, humid climate like Florida's. Heat pumps run year round and American Standard puts them at 12 to 15 years. Maintenance, coastal salt exposure and sizing move those numbers more than the brand does.

**Can I still repair my R-410A system?**

Yes. EPA states technicians can keep servicing existing R-410A systems, including major components, and no federal rule requires replacing one that works. Whether a big repair is worth it depends on the system's age and condition, because HFC supply is expected to lessen over time and large leak repairs on older equipment get harder to justify.

**Is my R-22 system illegal to keep?**

No. You can keep using an R-22 system as long as it runs. R-22 production and import ended January 1, 2020, so any recharge relies on a shrinking supply of recovered or stockpiled refrigerant. That is why a major failure on an R-22 system is usually the point to price a replacement rather than another repair.

**Do I need a permit to replace my AC in Palm Beach County?**

Yes. Florida law requires a permit to alter or repair a building system, and an AC change-out is permitted work in Palm Beach County and every city we serve. The contractor should pull it in their own name and schedule the final inspection. Even an emergency change-out must file for its permit by the next business day under the Florida Building Code.

**Should I replace the indoor unit along with the outdoor unit?**

In most cases, yes. Efficiency ratings belong to a matched indoor and outdoor pair, a new A2L refrigerant system needs a compatible indoor coil, and FPL's AC rebate requires a new system with both units. Replacing only the condenser on an old coil gives up the rated efficiency and can shorten the new unit's life.

**Is there still a federal tax credit for a new AC?**

Not for systems installed in 2026. ENERGY STAR lists the federal 25C credit for qualifying heating and cooling equipment as available through December 31, 2025. FPL still runs an instant rebate on qualifying high-efficiency systems installed by a participating contractor, so check its current terms before you buy.

**How long does an AC replacement take?**

Most residential change-outs are finished in one day, from removing the old equipment to starting up the new system. Jobs that add ductwork, electrical upgrades or a new equipment location take longer. The final inspection is scheduled with the county or city after installation, and we confirm the full timeline during the free estimate.

**How much does AC replacement cost in Boca Raton?**

It depends on system size, efficiency rating, refrigerant, duct condition, electrical work and how hard the equipment is to reach, which is why a number given over the phone is a guess. We give a free, itemized estimate after looking at the home, with the repair option priced alongside so you can compare.
